The Rick Hautala Papers
Videos on progress
This is a very special collection and close to my heart as I was a good friend to Rick Hautala and a close friend of his wife, author Holly Newstein.
The Rick Hautala papers were initially donated to the Warren Memorial Library Special Collections in 2002 and contained 20 cubic feet of materials. The collection was sent to off-site storage while the Warren Memorial Library went through its expansion. In 2003, the collection was taken out of storage and placed in the library’s newly added Archives and Special Collections room. The papers were stored in acid-free storage boxes by Anastasia Weigle, then Director of Library and Archives. A deed of gift was signed with a stipulation that the library had ownership of the collection to disseminate for research and program development in creative writing while copyright was retained by the author, Rick Hautala, and his immediate family. The deed also stipulated that if the library could not process the papers and make them available to the general public, as was the intent of the donation, the collection would be deaccessioned and returned to Rick Hautala.
In 2006, Hautala archivist, Anastasia Weigle, on behalf of the author, was asked to contact the Warren Memorial Library Board to deaccession his papers. The board agreed, and the collection was removed from the library. Rick Hautala turned the collection over to Weigle for storage and future processing. Additional papers were added to the collection and transferred back to an offsite storage facility. During this time, archivist, Anastasia Weigle, contacted the Director of the Folger Library in Orono asking if UMO archives and special collections would be interested in receiving the Rick Hautala Papers as Mr. Hautala was a graduate of UMO. Unfortunately, at that time, UMO Archives and Special Collections had the Stephen King Papers and space to receive the Rick Hautala Papers was not possible. A few weeks after Hautala’s death in 2013, his papers were removed from offsite storage and brought to Anastasia Weigle to process the remaining collection before finding a permanent repository.
In May of 2013, the Director of the Walker Memorial Library approached Holly Newstein-Hautala, widow of Rick Hautala, showing interest in housing the collection. A collection assessment report was provided to the Board of Trustees of the Walker Memory Library as requested to decide if the collection would be a good fit for the library. Holly Newstein was contacted April of 2014 by the Library Director to inform her that the board of trustees would not accept the Rick Hautala Papers due to lack of space and funds to maintain collection. During that same time, Lisa McDaniels, Director of the Southern Maine Community College showed an interest in the collection and an open dialogue began between the Director and the archivist, Anastasia Weigle. However, a month later the Director resigned to take a new position at Colby College and all discussions for transferring the Rick Hautala Papers stopped.
On January of 2015, the Maine State Head Librarian, James Ritter, expressed an interest in the Rick Hautala Papers for the MLS Maine Author's Room. After completion of processing of collection and the creation of finding aids, the Rick Hautala Papers were successfully transferred from the processing archivist storage location in Old Orchard Beach to the Maine State Library, Augusta, Maine with a target month of March 2021.
News: The Maine State Library will be the official repository of the Rick Hautala Papers with a transfer date of March 2021.
